En el nombre del Padre, del Hijo, y del Espíritu Santo. Empezamos y terminamos toda reunión, evento, oración, y momentos litúrgicos con la invocación a la Santísima Trinidad. Dios decidió revelarse a sí mismo en esta manera: como Padre, Hijo y Espíritu Santo. Hay muchos otros nombres y títulos con los cuales Dios se ha revelado en la historia, pero este trio de nombres y títulos son los que predominan en el Nuevo Testamento. En la historia de la iglesia tenemos mucha reflexión teológica sobre la relación dinámica entre el Padre, Hijo y Espíritu Santo. Tuve dificultad en explicarle al joven como Dios es uno y tres distintas personas a la vez. Después de un buen tiempo me dijo el joven: “deja ver si entiendo lo que dices. Yo tengo una hermana que está casada y tiene hijos. Para mi es mi hermana; para su esposo es su esposa; y para sus hijos es madre. Ella es la misma mujer y a la vez tres distintas personas para mí, su esposo y sus hijos.” Cuando escuché a este joven pensé: “este joven no es un teólogo, pero tiene una buena noción de la Santísima Trinidad.” Este ejemplo del joven no es perfecto, pero si útil para entender que Dios es uno y trino a la vez.
En la misma manera que nuestra relación con nuestros padres es diferente que la relación con nuestros hermanos; al igual, la relación con el Espíritu también es diferente. La relación con nuestros padres está basada en gran parte en el respeto, reverencia y honor. Para algunos, quizás, sus relaciones difíciles con sus padres les dificultan acercarse a Dios como Padre. En este caso, el Hijo (como hermano, amigo, compañero, Señor, o Mesías) puede ser nuestra conexión con Dios. In the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. We begin and end every gathering, event, prayer and liturgical moments with the invocation to the Holy Trinity. God chose to reveal God-self in this way: As Father, as Son and as Holy Spirit. There are many other names and titles that God has chosen to reveal Himself throughout history, but this trinity of names and titles is the dominant revelation in the New Testament. There is much theological reflection about the dynamic relationship between the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. In the 12th century the schism (break up) between the East and West in the Church was largely due to the different understandings as to whether the Holy Spirit is giving by the Father only or through the Father and Son. It is amazing to imagine today that such break up should have taken place over different understandings of this internal relationship of the Holy Trinity, but such is the passion that drives theologians.
When I was in seminary one summer I was helping out at youth detention center. The topic of the Holy Trinity came up in a conversation with a 15 year old boy. I found it difficult to explain to him how God is one and yet three distinct persons. Then after a while he said: “let me see if I can understand what you are saying. I have a sister who is married and has children. To me she is my sister; to her husband she is a wife and to her children she is a mother. She is the same woman and yet she is three distinct persons to me, to her husband, and to her children.” When I heard this young boy say this I thought: “he is no theologian, but he has a good notion of the Holy Trinity.” This example of the teenager might not be perfect, but it does help to understand the One nature of God manifested in three distinct persons.
In the same way that we relate to our parents differently than with our brothers and sisters; we also relate differently to that which we call the Spirit. With our parents there is a sense of respect, aw and sense of honor. We can also have closeness, trust and intimacy, as in tenderness of love. For some however, their difficult relationship with their parents might make it difficult to relate to God as Father. In this case, the Son (my brother, friend, companion, Lord, Messiah) might become our link to God. And if neither the Father and Son can bring us closer to the divine, perhaps the Holy Spirit can do what the Father and Son are unable to accomplish. The Holy Spirit that inspires, consoles and guides is the same Oneness of God. Long live the Holy Trinity! The Holy Trinity is God’s creativity in drawing us closer to Him!
